In a winter visit to Ireland, NS was made an honorary patron of Dublin University’s Philosophical Society, an honour shared with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, then Vice President Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi and Weird Al Yankovic (as she said, ‘an impressive and eclectic list’) and the following day addressed the Seanaid, the upper house of the Irish legislature. In this amicable speech she noted that both Ireland and Scotland have within their long histories painful experience of both forced and voluntary emigration and, in a logical connection that had evaded many, therefore had a moral responsibility towards refugees in the present era. The complex challenge presented by the EU referendum result was her main topic, together with a firm reassurance of continued friendship and co-operation.
